SUBURBAN RAILWAY SERVICE.

IMPROVED CONDITIONS,

The new and accelerated suburban train service between Wellington and the Butt Volley came into- operation yesterday , , giviug a good deal of satisfaction to rcguiar travellers on the line. In erery case tha time occupied on the journey between the Lower Hutt and tie city was cut down by three or four minutes, and the through trains to Lower Hutt and vice versa covered the distance in from 19 to 21 minutes, cutting down the time by ten minutes. This was the case in. those trains, which formerly made stoppages at Kanvarra and Ngaliauranga, but which now run without a stop between Wellington and Pctone. A short fee nt»o Messrs. W. B. Bridger' aud C. G. Jlayward, representing a large body of ! Lower Hutt. residents, waited on the Minister for Railways (the Hob. A. Myers), and pointed out several disabilities in the existing service. Those included the irritating frequency with which tickets were inspected between the Hutt and Pctoue, the long and apparently useless delays at Kaiwarra ana Kgahauranga, the 'amount of time lost by passenger trains through the shunting of meat wugons at I'ctone; and the want o,f an esnress through to Petone and the Lower Hutt" after 5 p.m. It was with no little satisfaction that it was noted yesterday that all those grievances had been attended to a.ncs abated, and that in consequence travelling between the city and th? valley will be much more comfortable and esppditious than formerly. By way of expressing thanks to the Railway Dcpnt tment for the improvement* pffpctwl in" the service, Messrs. Bridjei and Ifavivard willed on flio control mann"or for railways yesterday, and in the kft tor's nbwnrc' expressed their gratifiestion and Hinnks at the changed conditions in Mr. M'Villy, chief clerk, who, in reply, tifatprf that it was the only case on record where Hip Department had bn-n thnnlced for anything it had done to meet Hie desires of the travelling public.
