CONDITIONS, ON BOABD SHIP. (Bγ Telcgrach.— Press Association.) Christchurch, May 1. An interesting case was heard at Lyttelton to-day, when William Coffer, a,fireman on the steamer Cygnet, was fined £3 for failing to keep steam up. The evidence showed that the Cygnet 3iad an engineer and two firemen, the latter faking six hours on duty alternately. On a recent voyage to Kaikoura, while the engineer was sleeping, Coffey was iu - charge of the engine-room, his -duty being to oil the engines and lwep steam up. Coney went to sleep and let the pressure down to 181b. instead of SOlb. The magistrate, Mr H W. Bishop, remarked on the extraordinary fact that tiio engines of a veswl carrying passengers shoind be ieit in charge of a fireman.
