Ell at Wanganui, tho Hon. T. Buxton at Timaru, and tho other Ministers in Wellington. Tho Prirno Minister (Hon. T. Mackenzie) left for the south last night to fulfil the programme already published. £e will be absent from Wellington about a week.
The Hon. A. M. Myers returned yesterday from Auckland, and tho Hon. G. W. Bussell from Napier. Tho Minister for Public Works (Hon. W. D. S. Macdonald) left for Nelson last night to inspect the railway works in that district. Tho Minister for Education (Hon. J. A. Hanan) goes to Jlasterton by this moming's train, to open the new Assembly Hall for lecture purposes in connection with the District High School. He will also receive a deputation concerning the movement for the establishment of an agricultural college in tbc Wairarapa. The Hon. C, .T. Johnston aad Mrs. Johnston, who have been on a trip to England,' returned to Wellington by the Moana last evening. They were passengers by tho P. and 0. steamer Slalwa to Sydnoy. where they w.ere detained in quarantine owing to «. ease of small-pox having developed on tho trip from Colombo to I'remantle.
A cablegram was received in Auckland Yesterday'stating that Mrs. Hurries, wife of Mr W. H. Hemes, M.P., died on the wav to England. Mr. and Mrs. Herries left Wellington by the lonic last month. Mrs. Hemes presumably died on board between Rio de Janeiro and Teneriffe—Press Association.
Mr. Justice Sim will return from Blenheim to-night. Hβ leaves lor Auckland on Saturday.
Mr, E. J. Hulbert, cf tho Post and Telegraph Department, who has been appointed signalling , instructor on the 2\w Zealand Permanent Staff, was presented with a sword by the local letter-carriers on Monday. Mr. J. Johnston made the presentation, and, on behalf of the staff, expressed keen regret at Mr. Hulbertfs departure, and best wishes for his futuro welfare. Tho death occurred at Dunedin on Monday of Mr. D, S. Munro, manager of the Dunedin branch of the Commercial Union Insurance Company. The deceased was at one time on the staff of the Victoria Insurance Company. He was a member of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows. The death occurred at Waiuku, Auckland, on Tuesday of Mr. Arthur Fitchett, late of the Post and Telegraph Department, and son of the late Mr. John Fitchett, of Ohiro Road, Wellington. Tho deceased, who was 65 years of age, was an officer in the Department for over 40 years, and only retired about two aad a half yeara ago, since when he lias been resident on his farm at Waiuku. Mr. Fitchett leaves three sons (one of whom is a missionary in China) and a daughter. Mr. Ashton B. Fitchott, of Brooklyn (which township originally formed a part of Fitchett s farm), is a brother of the deceased. The Wellington Rugby Union decided last night to place on record its appreciation of Mr. E. Perry as a. footballer. Mr, Perry recently met with, an accident which prevents him from playing Rugby again. Mr. E. Little, who made the resolution, said that Mr. Perry was a true amateur. The professional people in New Zealand and in Sydney had offered him inducements, but he had declined them. Ho was still keen on the game, and was now coaching a third-grade team. The motion was carried, and a suggestion by Mr. W. Hardham that Mr. Perry should be granted a season ticket was also carried.
Mr. G. H. Scott, of the Scott Motor Agency, has left the Dominion on a tour of the United States and Europe. Hβ will bo absent from the Dominion until October next.
Our Christchurch correspondent states that Captain F. B. Head, the well-known Alpino climber and explorer, who had intended to epend about a year in New Zealand, has been -obliged to return to Lngiand, and is leaving by the Heinuera. He has received word that his brother, Mr. Christopher Head, a well-known Lloyd s underwriter at Home, was among the passengers lost in the Titanic. .
The Hon. H. G. Ell, accompanied by Mr. D. Hobertsoon, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, arrived at Waugajiui yestc-rdav afternoon. They inspected tho local post office, and questions of improving accommodation, installations, and delivery aro to bo considered. Tho Minister receives deputations to-day, and will afterwards bo .taken for a tour of the district. On Friday morning he leaves for Ruugiwahia to open a new post offioo and attend a banquet in tho evening. He catches the Main Trunk train at Mangawcka on Saturday for Wellington.—Frees Association.
Mr. D. C. M'Vicar. of the Bank of New South Wales, Cookwell, N.S.W., and brother of Mr. A. M'Viear, of Brougham Street, arrived from Sydney by the Moana lajt evening on a visit to his relatives hero and in Napier.
Mr. T. Carmichael, a former member of the Wellington City Council, who resigned his Beat, about eighteen months ago, when he changed his residence to Auckland, was one of those who attended tho Mayoral installation ceremony last evening. ■» As Councillor Frost has been elected permanent chairman of the City Reserves Committee, he has resigned tho chairmanship of the Outlying Districts Committee, and Councillor Fitzgerald has been oppointed to tho position.
Tho Mayor (Mr. D. M'Larcn), and Councillors Atkinson and Himlinarsh were nppoinfaSl last evening to represent tho City Council on tho preliminary conference which is to meet on May 6 'o elect representatives of the. local bodies in the Wellington Hospital District at the Local Government Conference.
Mr. J. W. M'Ewau (Mayor of Petone) has been appointed to represent tho council nt tho election, on Monday next, of delegates to tho Local Government Conference.
