PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, April 30. The annual meeting of the Palmerston Debating Society was held last night, Mr. A. E. Clausen presiding. The annual report stated that there were fifty-four members on the roll, and twenty-eight of these took part in debates. The balancesheet showed a credit of .£1 Bs. 10d. Tho following officers wore elected for Hie ensuing year:—Patron, Mr. .T. A. Nash; president', Mr. R. M'Nab; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. E. Clausen and F. J. Nathan; secretary, Mr. A., W. Downers committee, Messrs C. F. Spooner, J. Aitohi«ou. W. Robinson, W. M'Connon, and H. M. Haycock. F'vp new members were elected. The first ilebnto, next week, will I>P:— "That nil unmarried persons between tho ares of 25 and GO should be taxed," and Inter on (o debate (lie question, "Should the Compulsory Training Act be, reponlcd?" Mr. M'Connon was appointed chairmnn for the first month. At the Napier chrysanthemum enow, two Pnlmersro'n exhibitors wore very successful. Mrs. J. Harris secured the gold lnediif for the best bloom in the show, and second prize for best twenty-four blooms. Mr. F. Mason took three hrst prizes for chrysanthemums and several prizes for vegetables. Tho Manawrttu Rugby Union opens tho season next Saturday with senior ami junior compctiiions, the third and fourth cla?s. competitions being put off for a week. •
