SAN FRANCISCO OF TO-DAY.
BUILDING ON 1915. " '1915'—that is what' they, try to burn into your brain in San Francisco," says -Air, Maurico Jlanlliel, who has just returned from a visit to California. "All eyes are on 1915 and the great exposition they arc to hold there in honour of the opening of the I'anama Canal. The year is stamped on every hotel envelope, and on millions of copies of pamphlets which are boing sent out to all tho other States and all over tho world. Though it is throe years away, they are booming this exhibition—and they do know how to boom! Every evening over the big Humbolt banking building Iho huge figures '1915' Hash out in electric light, and, look whero you will, you cannot but see sone reference to 1915. They threaten to 'shako things up' in that year, but not, it is hoped, by an earthquake. "They have worked a miracle in San Francisco -since the big shake. It seems incredible that iu such a comparatively short spaco of time they should bo ablo to build a modern city. Practically tho whole of that great mid-city area has been rebuilt on a finer scale than ever before. Hero and there is a section still piled up willi tho debris of bricks and mortar shaken to crumbs by the earthquake, but these are comparatively few, and tho city continues to prow at a great rate.
"They look," continued Mr, Manthol, "for the big exhibition to give San Francisco and California a big lift forward, and I believe- Hint Ibo.v will succeed. While I was Microsome, of the delegations from the other Slates visited Golden Gato Park, the magnificent site of tho 1913 exhibition, to select locations for their exhibits.
"Whilo in.San Francisco I was present at a groat aviation meeting at Emeryville, Oaklands, just across tho harbour from tho city. It was a wonderful sight to mo—there w-oro oight competitors, including Blanche Scott, the wonderful lady aviator, who Hew splendidly. She is described as 'tho woman without nerves,' The crack aviator of the meet was llecchcr, who appeared to bo able, to do unythiuK on his machine."-
