LONG SERVICE.

TESTIMONIAL TO COUNCILLOR SMITH. x A meeting of ex-mayora, «;x-councillors and councillors of tho city oi Wellington was held at tho Town Hall yesterday, with a view to organising a testimonial to the acting-Mayor (Councillor John Smith), Thoro were present: Messrs. J. G. W. Aitken (convener), H. D. Bell, J. P. Luko, C. W. Tanner, F. do J. Clcre, A. Lindsay, F. M. 13. Fisher, M.P., W. J. Thompson, A. G. Jorgcnson, W. Lingard, 11. J. Williams, T. Ballinger, and tho Hon. C. M. Luke, and Councillors W. H. P. Barber, li. Fletcher, G. Frost, J. Fuller, jun., J. E. Fitzgerald, J. Godber, L. M'Konzio, G. W. Shirtcliil'e, and Dr. Cameron.

Mr. Aitkou, who was appointed to act as chairman, explained that ho had convened the meeting in order that consideration might bo given to a proposal to offer some fitting testimonial to Councillor Smith, in appreciation of his 27 years of service, to tho city of Wellington. Letters of apology were received from Messrs. John Dutliie, J. It. Blair, and Councillor Cohen. All stated their willingness to co-operate- in promoting the object for which the meeting had been called. Tlirco ex-mayors wore present (Messrs. Aitken and Hell and the Hon. C. M. Luko) and two forwarded apologies (Messrs. Duthio and Blair).

On tho motion of Mr. J. P. Luke, Mr. 11. D. Bell seconding, the following motion was carried unanimously: "That this meeting resolves itself into a committee for tho purpose of furthering the suggestion to mark tho services of Councillor ■Smith during tho past 27 years that he has given to the public." An executive committee was appointed consisting of the ex-mayors and Messrs. J. P. Luke, T. Ballinger, G. Frost, R. Fletcher, F. M. 13. Fisher, and J. Fuller, jun.

Tho sum of £2"> 15s. was collected in th« room. Mr. J. M'Bnin was.appointed secretary and treasurer of tho fund, and was instructed to open a subscription list at tho Town Hall. Tho members-of the executive committee will also be pleased to receive subscriptions.
