The steamship Alaineda ploughed through the Coleman Dock, the finest structure on the Pacific Coast, carrying off 100 ft. bodily, crossing the deck and hitting a small steamer on the other side, sinking it instantly. The captain's orders to the engineroom were misunderstood when the vessel was docking, and as a resnlt the Alamcda went full speed ahead. Tho captain tied down the whistle, and a crowd of people on the end of the dock ran for their lives. Several were injured. Tho crew of the small steamer was Hung into the water, but was rescued. The Americans call a pier or wharf a dock.
