LVSOL MYSTERY.
PIUSONEII AND THE POISON. On Saturday morning an inquest was held by Dr. Jt'Arthur, S.M., concerning the death of .Tames Burke, a man of C 3 year.?, who died immediately after being taken to the Terrace Gaol on Friday. Evidence was given by (he police'to tho effect that Burke had" been arrested on Thursday afternoon, on a charge of drunkenness. On the following day he had been taken before the Court at Mount and, afterwards, hail been sent to the Terrace prison in charge of Constablo Creclman. He had lx-en thoroughly searched when arrested, and no Tysol hail been found in his possession. Dr. Fyffo deposed that ho had held a post-mortem examination, and had found that Biirko's death was due to I.rsol poisoning. Alluding to the fact that the police had given evidence to the effect that Burko had had no lysol with him -when ho was searched after arrest, and that it was not possible for him to hnvo got it between that time and the timo of his arrival at the prison (seventeen hours later), Senior Sergeant Rutledge questioned ])r. FyiTe. Dr. Fyft'e's replies were (hut he thought that Burke had taken the lysol shortly !>eforo death, and that he thought it impossible for deceased to have taken the poison seventeen hours Ix'fore death. Ho also said that he had never known of lysol in powder form; that he had always known it as a liquid. The verdict was that Burko died of syncope due to his having takon lysol, which was evidently self-administered, but tli.it there was no evidence to thoir 'where ho obtained the poison.
