DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
BUSINESS PREMISES DESTROYED. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) Hawera, April 2S. A destructive lire occurred at Huwera at five o'clock this morning, resulting in the Central Hotel (Barclay Harrington, licensee, unii J). Barry owner) nu/1 Messrs. M'd'rucr, Bone, and Oi.'.s drapery premises owned by Mrs. Morrissey, being complexly destroyed. Th lire* originated in the hotel, ami when discovered it had a good hold. Tim brigade was considerably handicapped by the poor water supply, while a strong westerly was blowing. The fire, fanned by the wind, quickly enveloped (lie building, ami spread to M'Oruer, Hone, unci Co.'s, on the opposite coiner of High and Union Streets. • The brigade, seeing it was impossible to save the hoicl, concentrated its efforts on M'Gmer's buildim;, but were unable to check (he progress of the flames, and the shop -,vas burned to the ground. Nothing was saved from the hotel or the shop, the iiimafos of the hotel escaping in their night attire. JPdruer and Co.'s. stock was insured for .i'ltUlM in the .\eir Zealand Insurance office, and was valued af 4)80011; building, .(.'BOO in the South British office, valued at ,£2OOO. The hotel premises were insured for Jt1750 in the New Zealand Insurance office,' and -tIOOO in the London and Lancashire office, valued at over .£:i0(10.
