In th© City I chco Court to-dny, before Mr. Bartholomew, S.M., Margaret Parker was charged with sly grog-selling on April 14. ilio evidence for tlia police was to tho e fleet that a man named Hollander had three drinks tf whisky on the premises, whio Mrs. Parker'drank a glass of beer. Hollander paying 2s. for the liquor. Hollander had made arrangements with tiio police earlier in tho day to visit tho premises. In his evidence, Hollander said tlio defendant had spread "a dirty slander" about himself, his wife, and t'amily, and ho wished to "get even" with her. A low days later, in consequence of a message, ho went to sco the defendant, who offered him .£5 to square him. After counsel for tho dcfenco (Mr. Ilaillon) Had addressed tho Court, tho magistrate said he almost regretted that lie was unablo to express his opinion about soiuo phases of tho case, but ho could not do so as the matter had to go beloro tho jury. Tho defendant reserved her defcnce, and was committed for trial, bail being allowed iu her own recognisanco of .£IOO.
