The Prirno Minister, questioned here regarding the High Commissionership, said ho had decided upon a course for tho consideration of Cabinet, but had not yet submitted tho matter to his colleagues. INGLEWOOD LOAN. Inglewood, April 25. The proposal for a loan of .tBSOO for the purchase of an electric light plant was carried by a large majority. The proposal to raise .£IOOO for a Town Hall was rejected by threo votes. KILLED ON THE RAILWAY. Auckland, April 25. An inquest on tho body of Thomas Grubb, who met his death through falling while stepping off a moving train at Henderson on Tuesday night, was held before tho coroner this morning. From' the evidenco it appeared that the deceased got down on to the platform step, and fell. Before the train came within the area of the station lights ho had bfen dragged about twenty-five yards. He sustained a broken clavicle, three broken ribs, a perforated lung, and sundry cu'.s and bruises. Death was due to the perforation of the lung. A verdict of accidental death was recorded. DRAGGED BY A BOLTING HORSE. Auckland, April 25. A young man named Stanley Jones was leading a horso along the main road at Birkenhead yesterday afternoon when tho animal shied at a motor-car (which was carrying voters to a polling booth), and suddenly bolted. One of Jones's legs got cuughl in tho chain attached to tho horse, and ho was dragged for n distance of about fifty yards, causing a severe fracture, besides which ho received several minor injuries. OVERCROWDED MENTAL HOSPITAL. Auckland, April 21. Tho principal business of (he Hon. G. W. Russell's visit to Auckland is to inquire into the overcrowded state of the Mental Hospital at Avondale. The Minister informed a reporter that he had to-day consulted Dr. Hay, Inspector-Gen-eral of Hospitals, and hoped to bring the Auckland Mental Hospital doivn to a normal condition as lvmrds accommodation within a month. He then intended' to give attention to the question of erecting buildings to provide lor the future growth of tho institution.
ALLEGED SYSTEMATIC THEFTS. Greymouth, April 24. Two young men, residents of Brunncr, named Robinson and Watson, ivero this morning arrested, charged on 13 indictments, with during the past year having stolen a steam 'engine and a large quantity of engineering tools from different places in I lie Grey Valley, at Brunncr, Stillwater, Greymouth, and Nelson Creek, the property of the two Brunner coal companies, the Government Railway De- ■ partment, and private individuals. Tho ■ stolen property is of the estimated value of JilSO. Further charges will be laid. ■ Kobinson pleaded guilty to four minor 1 charges, and sentence was deferred till after the indictable charges liavo been ■ disposed of. A brother of Robinson has > been arrested and charged with receiving i stolen goods. TIRED OF LIFE. /Vshburton, April 24. At an inquest regarding tho death of C. E. Jeffs, a butcher, who committed suicide yesterday afternoon, it was stated that Jeffs had left a note to his 'wife, saying ho was tired of life. The man was in a good financial position, was of sober habits, and had been living happily with his wife. Be had never shown any signs of insanity. The coroner's verdict was "Suicide whilo temporarily insane." TERRITORIAL CAMP. Hawera, April 24. The 11th Taranaki Regiment of Territorials, who have been in camp for a week, wore to-day inspected by General Godley. Tho Commandant congratulated Col. Slalone, the officers, and men on the good work accomplished in so short a time, ivhich lie snid was most encouraging for the success of tho schema. Camp will bo struck to-inorrow morning. AUCKLAND BUTTER EXPORT. Auckland, April 21. For the present season 286,583 boxes of butter (143,290{cwt.) have been exported from tho province, as against 230,151 boxes (119,755Jcwt.) for last season, an increase for this season of 47,432 boxes (23,71Gcwt), equal to about 16 per cent.
FELL OUT OF GRANDSTAND. Timaru, April 25. At the Timaru races to-ilny a spectator fell over tho grandstand front to the stairway below. He sustained a bad cut on the I>ack of his head. Ambulance men and a doctor attended him, and the ambulance took him to tho hospital. CHANCE FOR ARCHITECTS. Auckland, April 25. The committee Bet up by tho Auckland Grammar School Board to deal with the question of tho proposed new Graiumer .School building on tho Mount Eden site presented its report to a meeting of the board to-day. Tho committee recommended that competitive designs should be called, and that tho designs shrnld lie so prepared that the cost of the buildings should not exceed J!J5,000. I'or the first, design tho committee, recommended that a premium of JMOO should be given, .£2OO for tho second design, and illOO for tho third, the three designs to become tho property of tho board. Tho report was adopted, BRIEF MENTION, Invercargill, April 24. James M'Watt. a second-liana dealer, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for keeping liquor for 6ale. Ho had been previously fined .£25 for a similar offence. Gisborne, April 21. Tho total subscribed by tho residents of Gisborne and district to the British distress fund' is £127 Ms. 3d.
