THORNDON METHODISTS.
REV. G. S. COOK WELCOMED. The thirty-ninth anniversary of the Thorndou Methodist Church was celebrated at a social cathering in the schoolroom last evening. The building was eoml'ortab.'y filled. Mr. V. Walton acted as chairman. "With him on tlie platform were the Revs. J. G. Chapman, J.'. J. Cossum, and G. S. Cook. Advantage was taken of the occasion to extend a welcome to the Rev. G. S. Cook, who lias lately been appointed to the Thorndon circuit (in succession to the Kev. T. I'cc and the Rev. C. 11. Olds), and to Mrs. Cook.
In their annual report the trustees stated that attendance at the Sunday services was Wing fairly well maintained, although > there was a certain amount of room toi improvement. The circuit had 124 accredited members and three on trial. In the junior division there wore 24 members and one on trial. The children on the roll of tho Sunday school numbered 130, and tho average attendance was ICO. ]!e----ferenco was mad'* to tho successful continuance of Bible classes, and it was stated that tho Junior Kndeavour Society, started during the past year, had alto proved a success. Tho trustees recorded their gratitude to tho members of the choir, and to visiting ministers and local preachers who' had at different times conducted services. The financial position was stated to be fairly satisfactory, but members who had not already dono so were asked to assist the trust fund by renting sittings. The various sections of the church each put forward a representative to extend a welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Cook. Tho Junior Endeavottrers presented an address. Mr. T. Sims spoke on behalf of the Smidav School scholars, Mr. J. Jones on behalf of tho congregation, Mr. E. Bird for the choir, Mr. P. Joseph for the Kaiwnrra congregation, Mr. A. Donst for the Bible Class, and Mr. W. Walton for the trustees. Brief addresses were also delivered by the Eevs. J. G. Chapman and P. J. Cossum, and Mr. Cook replied, thanking those who had so heartily welcomed his wife and himself. A number of vocal and instrumental items were contributed during the evening and refreshments were served by the ladies of tho congregation.
