A meat exporter, in giving evidence before the Food Commission, denied there were operations by agents of tho American Meat Trust on tho local markets. In support of his contention, he stated that meat was cheaper in New South Wales than in any other part of the world.
A MYSTERIOUS WITNESS. At the sitting 'of the Royal Commission on Uniform Standards in Australia for Foods and Drugs, held in Sydney on April 12:— ~,,,i, Mr. David Fell, M.L.A,. stated that he had no knowledge of tho meat trade, and his business had-not brought hnn directly into contact with it. He continued: I" am of opinion that there is some influence'at work in Australasia that affects the price of meat. Tho operations, which, 1 think, are controlled in Melbourne by certain gentlemen combined, had possibly had some effect. There are certain dealers in meat in Victoria who are ablo to control to a great extent tne price, of fat cattle, in connection with the local and oversea market, particularly, in Australasia.- . . The chairman: On what is. your opinion based?—On the information supplied to mc by people "in tho know"—behind tho scenes. Of course it is only a statement. The chairman: It has a very important bearing on the point. Mr. Fell: I will givo the information but I will not state it publicly. From information I have received from tb> inner circle, this hubbub lias been mado in regard, to the trust for their self-pre-servation.
