ALLEGED SYSTEMATIC FRAUD.

EX-CORPORATION CLERK CHARGED. (By I'eleiraph.-Press Association.) Dunedin, April 22. At the City Polico Court to-day Frederick Percy Evans, clerk, formerly ia the employ of tho City Corporation, was charged on five informations with appropriating Iho corporation's funds. The first charge was that the accused made false entries in an account book in connection with tho account of Lanham Bros., with intent to defraud. Counsel for the prosecution stated that the accused had been in the sen-ice of tho City Corporation for over 20 years, and was ultimately appointed clerk in charge of tho Gas Department. Counsel said Lanham Bros, were supplied with coko to tho value of .£lO7 125., on which tho discount amounted to £8 lis. Gd. A balance of ,£99 os. Gd. was paid, but tho accused credited the firm with only .» os. Gd., the balance being credited to an old account. No ono know anything about this old account, and when Mv. Lnnham was sent for, an extraordinary course of falsifying accounts was revealed. Dcfieiencics were shown making up tho old account, and accused admitted that ho had misappropriated money. Tho accused was suspended, and afterwards dismissed.

A' second ehnl'go also related to Mr, J.anham's account, nnd was in connection with forging anil uttering a voucher. The voucher was made (tut for £i Us. 2d., and altered to £o Ss. 2d.

The next, cass had reference to Manley and Co., the charge being one of having stolon a cheque received from Mr. Manley iu December, 1005. Mr. Manley gave a "cheque for .£lO, and it was not paid to tho corporation, but into the account of A. Moss, then a well-known bookmaker. I'.vans's endorsement was upon tlio cheque. The next one was of lalsifying tho books in Mauley's case.
