WIDOWS AND ORPHANS.
The valuation report of tho actuary, Mr H. T. Travcrsi, was presented and adopted at the quarterly meeting of the Widows' mid Orphans' Society of tho Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, Wellington branch, on Thursday evemiiß. Bro. It. Clark presided. The report showed that this society was established in 1849 with tho object cf affording relief to the widows and children of deceased members Tho benefit fund showed an increase from -£2393 to .E3G9G. The members are of an averago ago of dS year.". The average death payment is over .ESO. Tho deaths were all amongst old members, tlie number being four as against six expected by the New Zealand Friendly Societies', tables, and eight expected bv the Healthy Males' tablo (English).' Thero is a surplus of .£419 against .C3GS at 1906. The actuary recommended the application of JEI7O to provide additional insurance of 255. to each member for every complete year of membership between Decemlior 81, 190G, and December 31, 1910. It followed then that every member cf Class I would receive a total addition of .£ll to his insurance, whilst member!) of Class 11, who had completed four years' membership or more, would receive an addition of J:3. "The striking results of the society's operations," states tho actuary, "form quite an object lesson as to what can be achieved by successful management. Great credit is reflected en thoso who carried on the operations for so many years. The main source of prcfit for some time past has been Ihe excellent investment results, and so lone; as these are maintained with duo safety,' considerable surpluses should continue to accrue."
