THE TUNNEL PROPOSAL.
The annual meeting, of tho'. Hataitai •Jfatepayers .Association was held Inst night. Mr. A. Leigh Hunt (president) was in the chair, and thero were about 30 members present. In moving the adoption Of tho annual report. Mi-. A. Leigh Hunt referred to tho tunnel scheme, which must bo first in the minds of all Hataitai residents. Ho said that in criticising (ho elaborate, costly proposalsi'submilted by' tho City Ijugineer, Mr.' W."H. Morton, he had no thought, and he was sure, the .committee had lyo thoifghti 'of capabilities of Mr. Morton as an engineer. J lie tunnel via Elizabeth Street—a wider tunnel than tho present one, because it must be wide enough for vehicular traffic —was the one which the association asked for. .It need not bo more than 1000 feet long, instead *>f tho 1275 feet length of the present tunnel, and the cost, ho believed, need not be more than vE30,000, or ■£38,000 below the City Engineer's esti-' mate. He felt, as the committee felt, that the cost of widening Elizabeth Street should not bo charged to the tunuel scheme. He stated that tho executive bad been busy in obtaining funds for an independent report by an independent engineer, and „ tho .report would shortly be available.. Other items in tho report were commented upon briefly by the chairman.
The report wos' adopted,'" after brief discission.
The election of bfficers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. A. Leigh Hunt; vice-presidents,' Messrs. J. Fleming, W. Robinson, C. H. Seville; cymmittee, Messrs. A. D. Bayfield, Batt, Edwards, Bear, Kershaw, Maguirc, M'Goldrick, Penney, Cheeseman, and W. Young; secretary, Mr. J. L. Arcus.
