IBr GIENOOK.] The Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting will bo concluded at Trentham to-morrow, when the principal events to be decided aro the Autumn Handicap, ono milo and three furlongs', and the NewZealand St. Leger, for three-year-olds, one milo and three-quarters. ■ As on the first day a special train service has been arranged for.
In connection with tho Ashburton County Racing Club's autumn meeting, owners aro reminded' that nominations for, all. handicap,s close at ,9 o'clock tonight'with'''tho fclub'^''6tcf<itai 1 y ) Mr. A. A. Fooks.
Nominations for the Wanganui JockeyClub's winter meeting close at holf-past nine o'clock to-night with'the club's secrotary, Mr. Wm. Hall. Tho meeting takes place on May 23 and 24, and a capital programme has been drawn up. The principal ovents are the Wanganui [steeplechase, of 500 sovs., about three miles; tho Century Hurdles, ot 300 sovs., about two miles and n quarter; tho Connolly Handicap, of 250 sovs., one mile and' a quarter; and the Grandstand Steeplechase, of 300 soys., about two miles and a half. As W. Ryan's services will be required for Mira in the Hutt Handicap to-mor-row, C. Emerson will have tho mount on Tnrna. Horses that did not compete on tho first day at Trentham, and that have been accepted for to-morrow are-.—Flingot in tho Autumn Handicap, and Borsil, Ceylon; Lady Nolan, Te Waharoa, and Gay Lawless in tho Belmont Handicap. On Wednesday morning at Trentham, Bootle ran three furlongs in 38 2-ssec., and, later, carrying the same weight, Con-the-Shaughraun cut tho fraction oft' this time. Those who timed tho gallop were, needless to say, quite prepared for the victory of tho Hawera gelding. The New Zealand jockey, C. O'Neill, was riding at Deloraino (Tasmania) during Easter week, and had four winning mounts there. Though defeated, Blakeney probably ran his best raco to date in' tho Waiwetu Handicap, and it was quite a good performance to give Con-thc-Shaughraun a start, and then run him to within a length over seven furlongs. Tho excitable son of Soult seems to bo settling down now, and may not bo long in getting on tho winning list. Weights for tho first da.v's ovents at the Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting nro not due until the conclusion of tho Manawatu meeting next week. I Muknra and Sir Solo are to liaro a change of riders to-morrow, li. Deeley will ride both the horses named. T. Lloyd intended to race Master Laddo at the Mastcrton and Wellington meetings, but tho chestnut became entangled in a wiro fence two days before the firstnamed fixture, and his injuries were so serious that it will be somo timo beforo he races again. At the present time tho usually powerful Karamu stablo seems to be lacking in good handicap horses, and, instead of the usual largo team which carries tho cerise jacket at Trentham, only two are doing service at this meeting, while none of them will bo racing at Awapuni next week. Clemoes, who broke down badly while racing at Fcilding, could not be taken home to Hawera at tho conclusion of the fixture. The cross-country horseman, A.-Julian, is without a mount at Trentham to-mor-row. lie intends leaving for Auckland to-day, and will steer a couplo of trotters there to-morrow. Lady Moutoa and Moutoa Girl have been sent home to Foxlon, and will not be seen out at Trentham to-morrow. F. D. Jones will go to the Avondalo meeting next week to rido Monorail and other horses at the fixture. 1 The poor response received by tho Wellington Racing Club for the open wel'er event on each day of its meeting is difficult of explanation. It may bo that most of the horses likely to contest these events have be'en knocked out by tho racing done during the Easter week. This seems to bo (ho only solution of tho problem ns the nominations received were exceptionally good. Slourton and Soman, two horses that were to contest tho cross-country events at Trenlhani, both wont .wrong on the ove of the .meeting. The last-named is a particularly unfortunate horse, and has gone wrong repeatedly when fully "wound up" for a race. Labour Day, who did not complete any engagements at Trentham, is among the acceptors for tho Telegraph Handicap at A wapuni, and is also nominated at the Egmont; Racing Club's meeting. Sir. J. H. Pollock raised Breline, 191b. for his win in tho .Steeplechase on Wednesday, but his owner did not appreciate tho compliment, and tho horse is to remain in his box to-day. There are only four runners in tho Steeplechase to-mor-l'ow. and, after his good showing on Wednesday, Dorando, who has been raised 51b. for running second, is likely to go out a very warm favourite. Ronald Cameron, (he Xeir Zealand jockey, who has been resident in Melbourne for the past couple of years, has accepted a handsome retainer (n n.V i'or Mr. Chailey, a wealthy Adelaide sportsman, who is entering the racing galue on a large scale. Cameron did not- go (o llawhvick at Easter, as he had to ride
the mom bora of Mr. CliafToy'fi team at the Oakaparinga fixture, arid was successful in ft couplo of races there. 110 r&mains in Adelaide to ride Flamon in tho Cup there next month, and will thon roturn to Melbourne, wtaro Mr. Chancy will Bend all his horses to bo trained by J. Hayward. During the winter, Cameron hopes to bo ablo to carry out Ins proposed holiday trip to New Zealand. V. Cotton arrived at Ellerslio on Monday with Kohincor and Flip I'lap, of which are engaged at tho Avonualo J.C. autumn meeting. Prince Soult was due at Awapuni from Auckland yesterday. Tho brother to Master Soult is to lie a runner in th« Manawatu Stakes next week. Mr. 11. G. Allan, of Petone, writes in reference to tho hoisting of jockeys' names at the Wellington races, and asks: "Who is to blamo for tlio bungle that occurs in hoisting the riders' names before a. racoi' To begin with, the system of piecing letters together is a bad one, but is better managed in Cliristchurck and Auckland. How punters did groan when they put up Ladronc, who was scratched a day or two before, and hoisted W. Price to steady him. To race-goers intent upon business, it is no laughing matter, out painful and most disconcerting, this continued erasuro and alteration. And not to hftvo a complete list until tho field li in the starter's hands." FIXTURES. April 20—Wellington It.C. Autumn. April 21 and 25—ManawatuR.C. Autumn, May 1 and 2 —Marlborough R.C.
