MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho fortnightly meeting of the Miramar Borough Council was held at tho Miramar Town Hall last evening. Tho Mayor (Mr. Brodie) was in tho chair.
Letters were read from Councillors Richards and Laurenson tendering their resignations. Tho Mayor proposed that tho council should put on record its recognition of the services of the two Tetiring 'councillors. The motion was unanimously carried.
A letter was read from tho Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board asking the council to forward tho amount of the first quarter's levy of the annual contribution of £139 Is.
The engineer reported that, during tho past four weeks, tho principal work has been the completion of the south side of Broadway, which has been metalled for nine chains east of Fio Fio Read, leaving about six chains to be completed. The work of denning the main drain is proceeding, and will bo finished during the coming month. The amount paid as wages for tho period amounted to ,£l4B ss. [id.
The Mayor having read the general statement for the financial year ending March 31, complimented the council on a very prosperous term. The work of tho administrative staff had been heavy, and. the buildings had been more numerous than during any previous year. It wns the last meeting >of the council at which ho would preside, and consequently he would take the opportunity'of expressing his regret at leaving the council and of thanking both the executive staff and the councillors. He hoped that tho prospects would continue bright and successful. Tho following is an outline of the financial statement of tho borough as submitted by the Mayor at last night's meeting. The general account shows a debit balance ol' .£720 55., against a credit balanco last year of <£7U4 is. 3d. The unestimated expenditure included:—Miramar. Avenue tramway JiIOIS 10s. Id., less JIGdOi Wellington Gits Company subsidy, Town Hall, .£lOlO Ss. less i'23o; Government subsidy, .£7GO; Scatoun Park conveniences, ,£l7; fire brigade, .£99 and .£79; preliminary expenses on .£IB,OOO power' loan. Tho principlo items of receipts were:—Balanco at April 1, 1911, ,£721 2s. 5d.; general Tates (1911-12), ,£3lll 18s. Id.; Government subsidy, .£550 4s. 3d.; building permits, -£37; Wellington Harbour Board, interest on loans, .£l6l 9s. 2d.; sale of portion of tramways, .£1052 19s. The main items of expenditure were:— Electric lighting, i!IA2 3s. 2d.; gas lighting, i£32 19s. 2d. j sinking fund commissioners, .£llO3 os. 2d.; transfer to the tramway account, «E3G6 14s. lid. The i whams account (Showed a credit balanco of .£2l 13s. 3d., a.nd the tramways account a loss of ,£3GG lis. Ud. Sale of debentures on the waterworks loan of i! 23,000 vielded JC35.000, and the drainage loan of ',£25,000 had yielded =£15,000 also. Tho borough was fortunate in tho fact that, I since 1904, there had not beeu a penny of outstanding rates.
