ORPHANS' CLUB.
An important meeting of tho executivo of th'o Wellington Orphans' Club was hold on Wednesday night. Colonel Collins, C.M.G., presided, and Dr. , r zard, Messrs. Keenan, Batt, M'Govern, Gawthorpe, Uickmott, Carr, Hutton, Girdlostone, Warren, Blick, and M'Laughlin were present.
The new president, Colonel Collins, in I welcoming both new officers and members, s.iitl that it' was it pleasant duty to report that tlio forthcoming session promised to be most: successful. Already there was a greatly increased membership, and more comfortable and commodious premises were obtained, and future meetings would be held in the Masonic liall. "Orphans" would, therefore, now be able to better mingle with their fellows during supper relaxation, and this certainly would be conducive to creating greater sociability and cementing friendship. The chairman emphasised the fact that tlio literary side would not be lost sight of, and brief and entertaining lecturettes would bo arranged during the season, several prominent citizens having promised to deliver them. Hp had pleasure in announcing that the "ladies' night" would be held earlier this session, probably in the Town Hall, in.view of tile forthcoming projected visit of representatives from tuo Auckland. Dunedin, and Invorc.irgill Clubs, a reunion which would certainly be a. feature of musical circles during the year, as it was intended to bring an orchestra- from Auckland of 40 member?, which has set a very high, standard in work of this class. He was greatly pleased to say that his Excellency the Governor had consented to accept the ollice of patron this vear, and had expressed the hope-of being able to attend several of the functions, this year. An exceptionally lino programme had been drawn np for the opening night, to take nlaco on Stay I; a souvenir card would lie issued to all members' for the occasion. A high coinpiment was paid to the retiring president, Dr. Izard, for tlio invaluable jvorlc carried out during his tenure of ollice, and 1 lie chairman only hoped, as I hey had paid liiin the honour of succeeding Dr. Izard, that the club would progress as it had done under Dr. Izard's able and excellent guardianship. Til his efforts tlio chairman felt sure lie would have tlio support of all officers of the club. Several new members were clectcd. It was resolved that members could, invito .visitors to tho osening night.
