NEW THEATRE.
RESULTS OF COMPETITION. To celcbrate the termination of the first year of Messrs. MacMahon and Donnelly's lease of the New Theatre, the management inaugurated a prize competition of a. novel character. Patrons of the theatre for a week past were given forms, with the request to fill them in with the number of people—adults and, children—which they thought had visited the picture entertainments at the theatre during the year, and to append their names and addresses. For (no lady and 'gentleman guessing 'nearest 'to the correct number the management offered a prize of J!5 each. The competition closed oil Wednesday night, and yesterday representatives of The Dominion, "Post," and "Times" went through the papers to check them with the totil, which the daily dockets showed was 505,967. The nearest guess was made by a lady, Mrs. Telford, of Matai Koad, Mirainar, who guessed the number of SOG.OGO (only 93 oft tho correct number), and the gentleman to guess nearest was Mr. David Crawford, of 17 Jacob's Place, Wellington, who guessed 506,123. These persons 'will bo presented with tho prizes at tho first available opportunity. In connection with the competition, it is interesting to note that' figures ranged from 250,000 up to 5,000,000. The daily dockets, which clearly showed how many adults and children visit the theatre, wero handed to Mr. W. G. Talbot, professional accountant, who has certified that the figures are correct.
