The number of entries received seem to guarantee, a successful exhibition. The "social" held in connection will) the Presbyterian Church in the Masonic, Hall, at I'eatherston. on Monday night, was largelv attended, and proved a great success. "The Rev. Mr. Stowell presided. A concert programme was presented, and all the contributors met with an appreciative reception. Mrs. A. Clark played the overture on the pianoforte, and vocal numbers were contributed by Mrs. Clark ("Bonnie Charlie's Noo Awa'"), Mrs. Wickens ("Till Dawn"), Miss Wilkinson ("There Let 31 e Rest" and "Annie Laurie"), Jlr. T. C. Irving ("Scotland Tot," and in response to an encore "On the Goodwins"), Mr. Carson ("The Song that, the Angels Sing"), Mr. and Miss M. Irving, vocal duets ("Tell Her I. Love Her So" and "Too Late!"). Misf.es Hunter and C. Tait played a pianoforte duet, tho Kev. Mr. Stowel'l related a passage from "Beside the Bonnie Briar Bush," by Inn JlacLarcn, and Jlr. A. C. Holms gave a. recitation. SHANNON. In the unavoidable absence cY air. .T. Robertson, JI.P., Jlr. I'. \V. Venn, chairman of the Horowheiiiia County Council, formally opened the Mechanics' Institute and Public Library on Saturday afternoon. There was a fair attendance of the public. Councillor G. N. Stcphensnn, Jlessrs. T. Lind. J. Mitchell, W. Murdoch, and the Rev. Jlr. ,T. A. M'Konzie spoke, referring briefly to the history of (he institute, and the benefits to be derived by tho public from such an institution. In connection with the ceremony, Jlr. T. Lind has presented a pair of armchairs. A number of books arc being secured by the committee for the library
