IMPORTANT APPOINTMENTS.
POLICE AND JUSTICE.
Tho appointment of Inspector Cullcn, of Auckland, to 1)0 Commissioner of Police for Now Zealand, as foreshadowed nearly iv month ago in Titß Dominion , and other papeiv, was mado by Cabinet yesterday morning. At the same time, Mr. C. U. Jordan, Chief Cleric of the Department of Justice, was i.npoinlerf Under-Secrctnry for Justice, Theso appointments involve it return to the division of offices which obtained down to the retirement of Mr. W. Diniiie from tho Police Commissionership, as since that event tho two positions mentioned have been combined in the person of Mr. F. Waldegrave, who resigned ixt tho onil of last month. Both the new appointees arc next in rank for pro. motion in their respective Departments. Commissioner Ciillen was born in Ireland in 1851, and joined tlio lioyal Irish Constabulary, and served with that corps (luring tho years 18G0-7G. After arriving iu New Zealand, Inspector Cullcn served in the Colonial Armed Constabulary, and was promoted to tho rank of sergeant of pulico in 1678. Hβ has been stationed at Blenheim, Dunodin, Tiinaru, Chri&U church, Napier, and Wanganui, and suc« ceeded the lato Inspector Ilickson at Auckland in 1899.
Mr. Jordan was born in this city in 18G5. He joined tho Justice Department in 1885 as a cadet, nnd has boon a moraber of tho Department ever since. 110 was pro{noted to the position of Chief Clerk in 1900, but had fulfilled the duties for four year.s previously.
