PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the fortnightly mooting of the Petono Borough Council, fho Mayor, Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, was in the chair. Councillors Short, Wakeliam, List, Brockolbank, Cox, Lodder, Burridge, Tnienian, and Piper were also present.

The chief business of the evening was in connection with tho deputation from n tramway syndicate, represented by Mr. Petherick. The syndicate,'wishing to start a private tramlino in the borough, ap-proach-id the council, and' asked for a concession of riglit-of--vay for a number of years, promising, in return, to provide a suitable tram service. It was the syndicato's idea to use ]>etrol trams, which had proved very successful, and, to find out still more about them, a. member of the syndicate had gone Home to England. If the petrol (ram did not suffice, they would adopt the Edison storage battery train. In no case would they adopt any overhead system. But from nil accounts the petrol-tram would meet all requirements. The route proposed was from the station down Jackson Street to the park. Tho route to the end of Jackson Street would constitute a penhv section. ■Asked to make some definite statement ns to the time in which the lines would 1,0 laid down, Mr. Pethcriek said that ho thought that the Jackson Street routo could be completed in eighteen mouths, but ho could not guarantee another route down Cuba Street in .tiireo years. Councillors individually seemed to favour tho scheme, but, as it was a matter for tho ratepayers to ultimately decide, they did not see their way to grant Mr. Petlierick's request that, if his syndicate supplied a. written scheme that should meet..with the approval of the council, then tho council should ■ grant the concession. . It was ultiavAtely resolved that Mr. Petherick. acting on behalf of his syndicate, should place before tho council the exact, terms upon which tho syndicate were prepared .to conduct their tram service in return for tho concession should it b,e granted. The Mayor prepared to read the annual financial report of tho council, but owing to hosty preparation of the general account, It was resolved to send that account back for revisal. In the gas account tho total expenditure (including a sinking fund of .£213), amounted to ,£7405 7s. 6d., and the receipts to .£8983 13s. 9d., giving a credit balance of =£1305 6s. 3d. Subject to alteration, the water maintenance account showed tn expenditure of ,£3319 13s. Id., with a balance of .£1607 14s. 7d.' It appeared that the general account showed a total expenditure of ,£12,615 15s. lid. (including .£5123 13s. sd. balance brought, forward from the financial year ended March 31,.1911), with total receipts amounting to .£BBOO lls. Id. The motion that the accounts l>o sent back for rerisal was carried. The inward correspondence included a letter from tho Undersecretary of Public Works, re license to construct and use electric lines; from His Majesty's TradeCommissioner re number of motor-cars and cycles on their register for trade information; from TJnder-Secretary for, Internal Affairs inquiring if there was any memorial to his late Majesty King Edward VII—It was decided that the town clerk look into and reply to letters. Councillor Wakeham had given notice to move: "That tho honorarium of tho Mayor bo .£IOO per annum, with, a railway pass to Wellington." Tho motion, howover, was allowed to lajiso.
