CABLES V. WIRELESS.

« ROYAL COMMISSION SUGGESTED. By Telegraphs-Press Association—Oopjrlsht London, April 14. Mr. Charles Bright, F.R.S.E., the wellknown submarine cable expert, in the course of an interview, commented on the Imperial Government's progressiveness in connection with inter-Imperial wireless telegrams compared with the lukewarmness towards Imperial cables, and suggested the appointment of a commission to inquire into the relative values of cables and ethergraphs. CHEAPER WIRELESS RATES, In a memorandum issued by tho Mnrconi Wireless Telegraph Company last month, announcing that, it hail recured the contrict from tho Imperial Government for the construction of the chain of wireless stations to bo erected through the Empire, reference was made to i the advantages of wireless telegraphy as compared with tho cable services. It was predicted that since stations will no doubt ! be established in tho neighbouring coun- : tries, tho, colonies will bo in a position • to communicate cheaply and directly with any country with winch they are, doing ' business within a range of two or threo " thousand miles. As an instance of the 1 saving in cost likely to be effected by the ; Imperial wireless scheme, tho following iis cited':—Tho cable rate from London to British Guiana is at present 7s. per word. >V wireless station erected in that colony would enable its inhabitants to communicate direct with similar stations in Central America, Brazil, and, the United States, with other stations in the BritishIndies, and through tho stations in Spain with the United Kingdom, at a rate probably not exceeding Is. per word, and in every case with tho greatest speed. It was t added that by means of this "wireless chain" the Government will be able to secure much quicker communication with xthc fleet, and that it will shortly bo pos- • sible for warships travelling towards the a East to bo in regular communication with the Admiralty at any point on this side 0 of Hong Kong.
