LEFT PARCELS.
LABELS IN TRIPLICATE REFUSED.
A few weeks back tho Wellington Chanw per of Comnierco interested itself in Hie matter of labels for parcels left at a railway station. At present labels are issued in duplicate, but it was pointed oat that it would be to tho advantage of the owner and sender if the samo were issued in triplicate, so that tho Bender could receive a label corresponding to that on tho parcel. The General Manager of Railways (Mr. T. Bonnync) was written to on the matter.
Ho has replied as follows:"With reference to your letter of Januj nry 23 last, regarding the issue of leu parcels, labels in triplicate instead of in duplicate as at present, I jiavo tho honour to inform you that tho institution of a svstcm of giving receipts would increase the cost of operating the left parcels business, and if adopted tho imposition of an additional charge of pno pennv per packape would require lo be made. Muring th'o whole period that the present system lias been followed, tliero lla-s been almost an entire absence, of loss, while a great deal of the public's (imo hns been saved In- the simplicity of tho system, iiie elviim of a receipt would involve tho takiii" of a receipt on delivery, and practical experience shows that suck a system would cause endless vexation to passonKors who come at tho last moment to obtain their parcols-particnlnrly. at rush times For these- reasons it is not considered advisable to adopt the suggestion. ■Utcr the letter was read and discussed tho following resolution was passed:— "That further representations bo made to the General Manager for Railways with reference to tho giving of receipts tor left parcels at railway stations, again urg. ing him to accede to tho represent ationf of tho chamber."
