The Senate of the t'niver-ity of New Zealand met on Saturday morning to consider tho results of the recent ilegres examinations, and other matters. There were present:—Sir Robert Slout (Chancellor), in tho chair, Professor J. M. llrown, -Air. J. W. Tibbs, Pr.ife.ssor J. R. Brown, Professor llight, Mr. G. Hogben, lion! Dr. Collins, Professor R. J. Scott, and .Mr. L. Cohen.

the Exhibit ion Science Scholarship was awarded to Theodore Kigg, of Victoria College, and it was decided to ask .the Commissioners to award a scholarship to Percy William Burbidge also. Reports wero received from Messrs. 11. A. Thomson and F. L. Peck, outlining a scheme tor a Conservatorium of Music. It. was decided to forward copies of tho reports to the Auckland University College. The provision that candidates for R.A and LL.B. must havo passed in Latin'as for matriculation was interpreted to mean that the condition only applied to those candidates who have passed matriculation subsequent to the examination of 1910. A Bachelor of .Medicine of Glasgow University was accepted as a student, having kept one year's terms for the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

It was decided that candidates who have not completed their engineering preliminary examination may do so at tho end of their first academic year.

Tho marks in history for Entrance Scholarships, which were fixed at GOO at the recent annual meeting of Senate, were reduced to n"5 for this year only. The books in history for B.A.'for 1913 were prescribed as follow:—Swift's "Conduct of the Allies" and "Free Thoughts en tho Present State of Affairs," Steele's "Crisis," Bolingbroke's "State of Parties at the Accession of George I," Hume's 'Essays" (Routledge's Universal Library edition), Part I, Nos. 11-IX, XII; Part 11, Nos. VII. X [ I-XVI; and "Additional Essays," No. 111.

The following examiners were appointed: —Latin (for Professor Dcttman; zoology (for matriculation), Professor H. It. Kirk; history (for Entranco Scholarship), Professor Hight; bookkeeping (for agriculture), A. T. Clarke, A.C.A.; veterinary surgerv (for agriculture), C. J. Roakes, M.R.C.V.S. The Habens prize was not awarded, no candidate s essay being up to the standard. The amended courses in history for B.A. and Senior Scholarship come into force in

The following degrees weTe conferred:— Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical), on William Leonard Parker; Bachelor of Arts, on Agues Gertrude Stonehaven Merton.

I ho tree passages offered bv the Orient Steam Ship Company annuallv were awarded-one to Philip Svdnev Ilridson, the other divided between Theodore Rigg and Percy William Burbidgo. The Engineering Travelling Scholarship was awarded lo Frederick Noel Hamilton beamish, of Canterbury College. A graduate (M.A.) admitted ad cundera was given permission to proceed to tho decree of Doctor of Literature. t Candidates who have parsed in all subjects except one or two of tho fir.-t division subjects of LL.B. must take three subjects to complete. The following is a precis of the annual report to the Governor:—

Tho usual examinations were held in April, May, November, and December, Hill, and in January, 1012, in the faculties ot Arts, Science, M'edicine, Law, Engineering, Commerce, and Music, and for admission to the legal and accountants' professions. 'I ho total number of candidates at these examinations was 3250.

, At the annual ami special ,-essions the Senate ordered {he following degrees to be conferred by the Chancellor' or his deputy, subject to the payment of Ihe necessary fees:—The degree of Bachelor id Arts on lio candidates; the degree of Bachelor of Science on 11 candidates; the degree of llaehelor of Laws on 20 candidates; the degree of Bachelor of .Medicine on 10 candidate*; the degree of Bachelor of Surgery on til candidates: the degree of Bachelor of Commerce on 1 candidate; the degree of Master of Arts on 10 candidates; the ilegice of Master of Laws on 1 candidate; the degres of Master of Science on G candidates; the degree of Doctor of Medicine on 2 candidates; the degree of Doctor of Science on 1 candidate; the degree of Bachelor of Engineering on 1 candidate.

In addition 38 gained Honours in Arts; ■+ gained Honours in Science; 12 gained Senior Scholarships; 1 gained the John Tinlino Scholarship; 27") passed sections of examinations for various degrees, exclusive of the above-mentioned graduates; 102 passed various examinations for admission to the legal profession; 233 passed various examinations in accountancy; 10 gained Junior University Scholarships; 20 gained Senior National Scholarships; 2211 qualified for Matriculation and Solicitors' General Knowledge; 183 qualified for Matriculation, Solicitors' General Knowledge, anil Medical Registration: 07 qualified for .Matriculation only; 12 qualified for Matriculation and Engineering Preliminary; I (already nntriculaled) qualified for medical registration; t qualified for Matriculation, Solicitors' General Knowledge, and Engineering Preliminary: 211 qualified for Matriculation, Solicitors' General Knowledge, anil Medical and Engineering Preliminary; OS gained certificates of proficiency.
