HASTINGS. Frederick Hicks, aged about 25 years, met with a fatal accident in the liastings railway shunting yards about 2.30 yesterday afternoon. From the particulars available, it appears that deceased llieks, who was temporarily employed as a storeman by Mes-rs. Williams and Kettle, Ltd., was pushing an empty truck from .Messrs. Williams and Kettle's private siding out to Ihe railway line, about midway between the Heretaunga and Queen Street crossings. At this point thero is a turntable, and deceased went to tile front of Ihe truck to put on tho brake, in order to swing the wagon on to the shunting lines. Another empty truck was standing directly in front of the turntable, and deceased was caught between this and the truck which he .was endeavouriug to stop. FEILOING. Mr. M. E. Harmston, of the Hastings railway ticket office, is to be married in Feilding ou Monday. Mr. Harmston received wedding presents from his fellowmembers of tho railway staff and others. To-day, four rinks from the Wanganui Bowling Club are to play two tournaments (morning and afternoon games) on the Feilding greens. J. Parsons, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. •T. S. Parsons, of Kimbolton, won the junior championship at tha Wanganui Collegiate School's athletic sports on Monday. Tho championship was won on points. Mr. Williams, of Waituna, has sold his farm to a son of Mr. J. 0. Batchelor, of Palmerston North. A farmer from the Feilding district informed an Eketahnna "Express" representative that he had been compelled to of his dairy farm owing to his inability to procure labour. Mr. Edwards, manager of the Bunnythorpe Co-operative Dairy Company, is to be married on April 17. A presentation from the suppliers is to ba made to him this evening. SHANNON, Miss Stevens has been appointed temporarily to the local school staff. A hockey club is being formed in Shannon. j Tho opening of the Publio Library and Mechanics' Institute will take placo this afternoon. Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., has been invited to attend. Mr. Cripps has taken over Mr. D, "M. O'Connor's property at the end of the East Road. Last_ Sunday the funeral of the late Mr. William Henry C'rowther took place, ■ the graveside service being conducted by tho Rev. Mr. Clias. Palmer. The cor» tego was a long and representative one. The deceased was one of the oldest and best-known settlers in the district. Deceased was G8 years of age. , At the second "shoot" for the silver cup at the rifle range on Saturday' the following were the Mores, the conditions being seven shots at 200, 500, and GOO yards:—Rifleman Hallam, handicap 10, total 105; Rifleman G. Woodmass, handicap 10, total 88; Rifleman E. Sutton, : scratch, total 97; Rifleman Richards, han'dicap 10, total 97; Rifleman E. Spencer, scratch, total 95 Rifleman B. Spencer, scratch, total 95; Captain Stephenson, scratch, total 94; Rifleman E. Law, handicap 10, total 94; Rifleman H. Sutton, , handicap G, total 85; fiifleruan Mitchell, handicap 20, total 88. It is said that Messrs. Laurvig and I Petfersen ; ntend erecting six or seven dwelling-houses in Shannon. Tho building trade both in Shannon and Tokomaru has been very brisk for the past year.
