MASTERTON NOTES.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Mastcrton, .April 12. In tho Magistrate's Court this morning, two. young men, named Lawrence Robinson mid Alfred I'auliiig, wero charged with branches of the Defence Act, in failing to take the oath of allegiance. Robinson, who said that ho had conscientious objections to (he compulsory' system, absolutely refused to sign, and was fined 40s. and 7s. costs, Pauling said that ho had taken the oath two or three times as a volunteer, and was willing to serve as such, but lio would not take th© oath under the compulsory system. Oil accused giving an undertaking to attend drill, the case was adjourned till next Court day.: A Ma'stertbri settlor has sustained heavy loss by the visitations of deer to his turnip' fields. ' ; * , Dairy farmers in this district are devoting attention to ensilage as a winter feed for stock. A number of large silos have been, put down this season. Tho maize crops in the Mastcrton district have been a complete failuro this year, owing to the unseasonable weather experienced. , For tho quarter ending March 31, the attendance at tho Masterton District High School returned tho satisfactory percentage of; 95. , At tho meeting of tho Wnirarapa Presbytery in Mastcrton this week, it was intimated that the Rev. Mr. Fraser would visit the Wairarapa shortly, with the object of urging the raising of certain homo mission, stations—notably Eketnhuna and Pongaroa—to fully sanctioned charges. Tho monthly .meeting of the Mastcrton District High School Committee was held last evening. The treasurer reported a credit balance of .£32 17s. It was reported that tho new assembly hall would be ready for opening in about a week's time, and a sub-committee was set up to arrange for its ir.inishing and equipment. The chairman and secretary were appointed to deal with the annual report.
A chargo against a young man named Christopher Carr of a breach of the Licensing Act, in offering liquor for sale in a No-License area, was dismissed in the Jlntristvnfr's Court this morning.
The children of the Masterton District High School have subscribed £12 10s. toward the local fund for the relief of starving women and children in England,
