What are as "the telegraph fraud" charges concluded nt the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Edmund John Walsh and John Vernon Binley were charged with conspiracy to defraud Scott j a;id Martnulale and Boss and Bradshaw by means of racing telegrams alleged to lmvo been altered by Binley before transmission, he being the official at (he telegraph office. Also two charges of attempting to obtain money from tho firms mentioned by falsi; pretences. Accused were committed for trial at Iho next Supreme Court sittings at Blenheim, counsel admitting Iho evidence, in tho latter charges as being the s'amo as in tho conspiracy charge. On a further charge of obtaining from Pcott and Martindale certain moneys by means of false pretence willi intent to defraud Against Binley only, counsel would not adi'jit the evidence, and Inspeo .tor Ellison adduced evidence in support of the charge. Walsh, when put in tho box. declined to give evidence oil counsel's advice on the ground that it might incriminate him. The magistrate said it was for the Court to soy if it would protect witness or compel him to give evidence. The case was adjourned till next day.
