ON AN EMIGRANT SHIP.
Sir,—ln yesterday's paper a statement was published concerning the conduct of many young women on the Athcnic, and, as one who came by that ship, I can testify that Mr.. Gilbert's remarks are not in tho least overdrawn, and there is really verv great need that a. bettor selection should bo made of those we are bringing to this land, and also that (hose in charge of these young people should have a conscientious idea of their responsibility. It was tho ordinary thing on fine days to see some of these young people lying about the deck forward in the embraces of some of (lie men, and under tho nose of the officer 011 the bridge. This muv not be exactly immoral, but it is exceedingly indelicate and disgusting to decent people.—l am, etc., H. LAKE. Christchurcli. [We have deleted from our correspondent's letter some criticisms of the general management of the ship, which are beside the point in issue.]
