BACH'S PASSION MUSIC.
John Sebastian Bach's "Passion" music (of St. Matthew) was sung Ln an abridger form by tho choir of. St. Paul's ProCatliedral last evening before a largo attendance. This is perhaps as iino a,n example of the composer's choral music as there is. The music, solemnly melodious throughout, is inspirational in the broad grandeur with which the composer "painted the picture" as he savt it. Tho "Passion" music of St. Matthew is intimntc. impressive, and poignn.nl with tho sublime sorrow. The choir, a well-bal-anced body, sang the chorales very well, and' were conspicuously good in (lie unaccompanied passages, where the beauty of Uncli's wonderful harmonies was mure clearlv defined. The soloists were hardly so effective, more than one finding it difficult to keep in time. Mivr Gladys Wat kins was the soprano, Mi.-s Mitchell the contralto, Mr. U. 11. Olarkson the bass, and -All'. James Scarle the tenor. The work was performed under the baton of Mr. F. V. Waters. Mr. Robert Parker presided at the orgnn, Mr. Eric Wnters nl tho piauo, and Mm Oracc Keaucd? led & umU of itriMfc
