(By TcloKrapU.-Speci.il Correspondent.)

Wanganui, April 12. Tho Wanganui Borough Council has allotted ,£IOOO from tho Sarjeant bequest for the purchase of pictures in the Baillis collection, now in Wellington. Some difficulty may arise, however, owing to the fact that tho transfer of tho bequest to tho council is not yet complete, and, in tho event of satisfactory finance arrangements not being made, the project will have to bo abandoned.

If carried out, however, Iho purchass will form tho nucleus of the Sarjeant Art Gallery, tho sito for which will probably bo in Queen's Parlt. A coramitteo of art experts (Mrs. Sarjoant's name being added thereto) was appointed, to go to Wellington in connection with tho proposed purchase.
