PROFESSOR HASLAM RETIRES.

Christchurch, April 12. Professor F. W. Haslam, who lias occupied the chair of classics at Canterbury Colle»o for the past 32 years, u resigning on tho ground of ill-health; [Sir. Francis William llaslam, professor. of classics at Canterbury College, was born at Cotta, Ceylon, on January 30, 1818. Ho attended Rugby, where ho became head of tho school, and obtained an Exhibition. On going to St. John's College, Cambridge, he won an Open Exhibition and Foundation Scholarship, and Graduated at 8.A., with a First Class in Classical Tripos in 1871. Ho was appointed composition master at Tunbridgo School, and later ou head of tho Classical Department in tho United Service College, Westward Ho. When it was decided to establish a Chair of Classics at Canterbury College he was selected for the position. At the end of 1879 he arrived in Christchurch to take up his duties early in ISSO. During his long term of servico many pupils have passed through his hands, and a number of them have distinguished themselves in other countries. Piofessor Haslani lias always been very enthusiastic in his work. Evidence of this is shown by the fact that when ho went to the Old Country on leave a few years ago he succeeded in obtaining a scholarship at Trinitv Collce, Cambridge, ovailablo only to students of Canterbury College.]
