Edmund John Walsh, grocer, and John Vornon Binley, telegraphist, appeared at the Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with conspiracy, by deceit, to defraud Ross and Bradshaw and Scott and Martindnle, Wellington, of sums of .£34 and ,CSO 10s. on certain betting transactions. It is alleged that Binley arranged with Walsh to go to tho Wanganui races, leaving signed-.telegrams to the firms mentioned, containing the names of horses likely to win at, Wanganui, the telegrams to bo handed in prior to the limo of the race. Walsh telegraphed the winners to an address in Blenheim. Binley watched Wn.ngaitm' wires, and held back the telegrams to flic firms named, erased the horses' names, and substituted the winning horse. The firms became suspicious, and made inquiries, a prosecution being the result. Inspector Ellifio:i is appearing for the police.
The case is proceeding.
