COMMERCIAL OUTLOOK.
VIEWS OF THE AIAYOU OF AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, April 11. While in Wellington last week, the -Mayor (Air. C. .1. Parr) v;as not overfavaurably impressed with the business | tone of the capital. "'I met a goud manv commercial men while in Wellington,'' said Air. Par, "and there is no doubt that the positron is not as .satisfactory as is desirable. It was rather surprising to find that the general opinion in Wellington is that Auckland is going to sht.-tly experience just as bad a time ns they in (he southern city have had to face. Personally I consider that if we aro cautious, and careful not lo boom things, and adopt conservative finance, we shall continue to enjoy our present progress and prosperity. I am one of those who hope for much from the opening of the waste lands of the province, and confidently expect that, the Hon. A. Al. Alyers's control of the railways on business lines will greatly help the city and province. It has also to he remembered when discussing Auckland's progress that development has been on sound lines. The activity in building circles has been warranted by the increase in population, and investors have observed a very fair margin in lending money on these properties. Under the circumstances, therefore. I fail to see that Wellington's pessimism is justified so far as Auckland is concerned."
