Auckland, April 0, A young man promoted a sweep at Ellerslie Racecourse, on Monday, on the St. George's Handicap, and induced quito a number of speculative clients to risk' their half-crowns in tho gamble. The prize was to be paid out after the race at an appointed place, but when the holder of the winning horse, which turned out to be Antoinette, turned up to receive his money, the young man was not to be found. Subsequently the impromptu sweep promoter was arrested, and to-day he was fined .£lO, in default two months in gaol.
