CLOSING SYDNEY AND MUSEUM STREETS.
Sir, —The residents in the west-end of Sydney Street aro indebted to you' for bringing to light the position they are in at tho present juncture. We see that ' thero is nothing between lis and «■ complete severance from reasonable access to tho city except tho statement of the Acting-Mavor that tho City Engineer is attending "to it. If the City Engineer had full power to deal with the situation wo would feel confidence in his discretion; but the City Engineer will have to do as ho is told by tho council and wo feel no confidence that tho council is alive to the necessities of the occasion, or that if it is alive to thein the Government will not succeed in enforcing any particular scheme they may have in mind regardless of any other consideration whatever. Surely it would bo an easy matter for someone in authority to state definitely what this mysterious scheme is and sot at Test the doubts which at present trouble us. 111 the meantime thero oan be only one opinion as to the crass stupidity ot the proposal to block up any artery of traffic for no earthly reason except that at somo problematical period in tho remote future a building schemo may bo put into operation, while no uso whatever will bo made in tho meantime of tho area from which tho public will bo excluded.—l am, etc., E. BUCHOLZ.
