"TUBBY."
The latest nursery favourite, which has almost ousted the Teddy bear, is "Tubby" (says mi English writer), a tut, di.-ttirted creature, of dog-like shape, with a whimsical face, moveable (joggly eyes, one ear up and the oilier ear do.vn. Its eonipaniou i.-, called "Fit," mid is nf the tat lamily. In Paris they are named "Mimi" and "Fifi." Of the two "Tubby" is the more popular. .Durii'g the last (en years there has been a series of weird nursery creatures. First there was the golliwog," which was the rage for ((iiito tlirro years; I hen a podgy I'uek was tried, but did not take; then a black eat. Some genius next invented the Teddy bear, the diminutive bear which the late President of the I'nited States loved to shout. The Teddy bear conc|iier?d the world; but even his reign came to an end, and the toy purveyors looked about for something else. "Billy Possum" (President Taft s supposed favourite dish) was tried and failed. Next came "Caesar," the late King's favourite 'log; the sale for this was brisk, but not to be compared with that of the Teddy hear. Finally "Tubby" has appeared, and at once has leaped into favour. A curious point is that each animal, from the golliwog onwards, has been sold in its tiniest size, as a mascot for grown-up people, and wo have seen Teddy bears and black cats pinned on motor-cars and aeroplanes for luck.
