In tho Court of Appeal yesterday morning, Sir John ITindlay, K.C., mentioned the case of tho King v. the Auckland Electric Tramways Company, and asked if the Court would make a fixture. Mr. Justice Deimiskm intimated that the case would not be taken before April 15, but declined to lis a definite date. On Easter Monday the Post Office will be open in all, its branches (except the Money Order Department) from 9 to 10 a.m. Mails by steamers sailing on that day'will close at 8 a.m. The only dispatches by trains will be for the Wairarnna, Manawatu, AVanganui, and Taranaki districts, closing at 6.30 a.m., and for Hawke's Bay and Auckland, closing at S a.m. There will be no day clearances of the city and suburban receivers, and no deliveries by letter-carriers. Counsel in a case in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday stated that tho defendant, who happened to bo a very, very stout man, of nineteen stone weight, appeared to have been trying to hide his identity. "Ho might be able to hide his identify," observed Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., "but ho would have Borne difficulty to hido himself." Owing to the Easter holidays, tho Industrial Association's ordinary meeting, convened for Tuesday next, has l>ecn postponed till the following Tuesday. Tho St. John Ambulance Association will be getting training classes, under way shortly after Easter. A meeting of tho association is to be held some time this month. Tho City Council last night adopted a. by-law regulating: tho control of butchers' •shops in the city. The by-law has been under consideration for fome lime., and various amendments of a minor nature have been made in tho original draft on the recommendation of tho master butchers.
Tho Hon. J. Colvin (Minister for Mines) is to leave Wellington on Thursday on a visit to Christchurch and (ho West Coast. Early next week ho is to preside at the ceremony of opening an extension of the Kuiuarn water-race, a work winch has just been completed. One peculiarity of tho now race is that it passes underneath the waters of tho Teramakau River, large pipes being laid, syphon fashion, down tho banks and across the bed of the river. Tho exact date of tho opening ceremony has not l>een fixed, but it will probably tako placo on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Mr. Colvin plans to reach Greymouth on Saturday night.
Figures placed beforo the Wellington Hospital board by its secretary, yesterday, showed a, decrease in tho population of tho Wellington Hospital district, and also in Wellington city's population. The figures for 1010-11 gave "the population of tho Wellington Hospital district as 106,G77, and the 1311-12 figures aro 100,975, a decrease of 5072. Tho decrease in Wellington city was represented as 71G5. Tho figures are taken from estimates supplied by the Government statistician.
"Extraordinary contingencies, .£500," WR3 an item in the estimates of expenditure for the year presented to the Wellington Hospital and Chnrilablo Aid Board yesterday. Then came tho following note: "With regard to tho last item, the cotnmittec is of opinion that this extraordinary provision is necessary, in view of tho possible result of tho present industrial unrest."
