SHORT OF WATER.

DUPLICATION URGENTLY REyniiED. A disquieting report as lo the, slate of the water supply.for Wellington was presented lo the Finance Committee of the City Council by the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) yesterday, the report was as follows:—"! desire to bring under the notice of the council (he present condition of the wafer supply of the city. Owing to (he inability of the existing 21inch main to bring in a sufficient quantity of water from Wainui-o-mata, nnd at the same timo maintain n pressure in tha mains sufficient; to reach the houses on the higher levels of that area of Ihe city served by Iho gravitation system, a very huge quantity of water has to be drawn from tho Kirori reservoirs, with tho result that the new reservoir at Karori is row practically empty, and the water in the old reservoir is about 12ft. below tha overllow level. I do this in order that it call be easily understoid how extremely urgent the duplication of the main from Wainui-o-uiata really is, and that, until such work is completed a great risk of a failure of Ihe citv supply exists. X serious break in the JYaiiiui-o-niafn main would throw the whole of tho work on the Karori reservoir, which, with tho small stream now running, would soon be depleted. On this account everv effort will be made to complete tho duplication by about Ihe md of tho year, including the Bell Road reservoir, but it is just as well that tho true stale of. affairs should bo properly understood." The committee authorised the expedltins of the work.
