HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Cur Special Correspondent.)

Travellers on the suburban railway between Hutt and Wellington state • that they are still dissatisfied with the service. The only apparent improvement since the deputation waited on tho General Manager (Mr. Ronayno) is that passengers are not called upon to show tickots as frequently as in the past. Residents are indignant that no improvement has been made in the running time, and long stops at stations. Another deputation is ikiing organised to interview tho newly-appointed Minister for Railways, the Son. A. Myers. PETONE MAYORALTY. Mr. Piper opened his campaign as a candidato for the Potoao Mayoralty last evening at St. Augustine's Hall. Mr. D. Keir was in the chair, and there were about 100 peoplo present. In introducing tho candidate the chairman said that ■Mr. Piper, had been a resident of Petone for 2G' years, and wa3 well up in municipal matters. Tho candidate received an attentive hearing, and after answering a number of questions was accorded a vote of thATiks. HUTT RIVER INSPECTION. The Hutt River Board will make a thorough inspection of that portion of tho river under its control this morning, commending at 8 o'clock. The inspection is bein<» made in view of certain recommendations by the-board's overseer (Mr. E. Fisher). In parts of tho river bank there has been serious erosion, especially in the vicinity of the Hutt golf links. Several protective works have already been sanctioned, and some of them completed; but Mr.. Fisher urges that others should bo taken in hand immediately. The cost will not be very great, and it is advisable that the work should be finished before the winter floods set in. . The board is anxious to come to somo decision on tho matter at its meeting early next luontt
