SOUTHLAND GRASS-SEED.
A POOR HARVEST. The large quantities of grass seed expected to bo harvested ill Southland this season by hundreds of farmers will (says the "Xews") fall much short of the estimates. Some (unfortunately a very few) have threshed out fair samples (241b. to 221b. samples), a largo number have threshed out light seed, and a. still larger number have abandoned their crops either in stook or still standing. Those who were unable to get a reaper and binder into their crops were perhaps the l>est off of all. The grass has threshed itself out on to the ground, but n certain amount of good conrse feed is available and suitable for cattle. One farmer states that lie has let a large paddock of this kind of feed to a cattle dealer at Is. (id. per head until eaten off, a poor substitute for his estimated seventy bushels to the acre of good seed. Still, ho has much to be thankful for, as many of his neighbours have been to the expense of cutting and stooking and turning the stooks several times, and finally burning them.
A successful factory business can not be built up unless the working plant is of the best description. Inferior or oldfashioned utensils eat up profits in repairs, lost time, and inferior products. When planning for next season make it a point that "Victor", Vats and Cheese Hoops be installed. They are easily ahead of all other makes, and have proved wonderfully successful wherever used. Full information obtainab'e from Albert J. Parton, Carlerton.—Advt.
Chick-rearing is not only profitable, but a pleasure, when you feed "A and P" Chick Kaiser. It is a complete and pro-pei'lv-blentled food for oung Chicks. Obtainable from all storekeepers.—Advt.
