George Taylor, who was injured by being caught between two trams at Takapuna, (lied in tho hospital after his ley had been amputated. EAST COAST RAILWAY. Napier, March 27. Good progress is being made with the preliminaries of tho first section of the East Const railway, and when the eontract for tho supply of rails and sleepers is let everything will be in readiness U push right ahead. DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC. Dunedin, March 27. Mrs. Crossan, of Roxburgh, died yesterday afternoon during the administration of an anaesthetic for tho purpose of permitting au operation. There were two doctors in attendance. They certify that death was due to heart failure while under the anaesthetic. The coroner has been informed. MAORI YOUTH IN TROUBLE, Hamilton, March 27. A Maori youth named Manutohi 'l'ere. nui, charged with theft and forging and uttering a cheque, pleaded guilty, and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. SERIOUS CHARGE. Dunedin, March 27. At the City Court Susan Millar Wilson, a widow, was charged with committing an illegal offence on a young woman, whose condition is alleged to be precarious. She was remanded for a week, bail being fixed at -C3OO and two sureties of ,£ir>o each. MOTOR ACCIDENT-FATAL OUT-. COME. Dunedin, March 27. Charles Reid, third sou of Donald Reid, and a brother-in-law of the lion. T. l'ergus, died this morning. Deceased met with a motor accident in South Otago a fortnight ago, but had seemingly recovered. Death is understood to have been due to a clot of blood on the brain, tho outcome of tho accident. CRUSHED BY A CRANE. Hamilton, M ( nreh 27. A sad accident occurred at Frankton ■engine-sheds at 2 o'clock this morning, whereby nil acting-driver named George Joseph France, aged 29, lost his life. .He was coaling up prior to running into the sheds, and was working a pneumatic crane. When lifting the load the crane capsized, pinning l'Yance underneath and crushing him terribly. Death was instantaneous. Deceased leaves a young widow aud a child. FATALLY BURNT. Auckland, March 27. Through his garments being ignited from a candle, C. E. Leeds received injuries which resulted in his death this morning. The deceased was taken ill in tho night, and a lighted caiullo by some means managed to set his clothes on fire. It was conjectured that a seizure was the. cause of tho occurrence. The deceased, a married man, was a retired solicitor, G5 years of age. THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE. Auckland, March 27. Two young men are at present serving seven days' hard labour in Mount Eden Gaol for non-payment of fines imposed for refusing to take the oath of allegiance as required by tho Defence Act. The fine that was imposed in each caso was .£2, and costs 7s. One ,of .the men wont to prison on Monday, and tho other on Tuesday. GISBORNR BUTCHERS' STRIKE. Gisborne, March 27. There is no change in regard to the butchers' strike. Tho men assembled on the wharf this morning to bid farewell to threa of their number who wero leaving for Waihi to obtain billets. Matters are expected to remain in abeyance until the arrival of the Auckland organiser on Sunday. In the meantime tho shops oro open, and some deliveries are being effected.
DANNEVIRKE TOWN.HALL. Dannevirke, March 27; Tlio new brick Town Hall was opened by Lord Islington this afternoon. The bnilding was designed by tho Hon. Win. Pitt, of Melbourne, and seats about ona thousand. Tho work cost JJII.OOO, including tho installation of electric , light, carried out by Mr. J. H. Fairhurst, the contractor, who was given a gold watch by the council in appreciation of the faithful manner in which tho work was carried out. Lord Islington to-night attended the performance of "if.M.S. Pinafore" by the Amateurs, aud afterwards left by special train for Wellington.
