A HEADMASTER'S IMPRESSIONS.

WHILE ACTING AS SCHOOL INSPECTOR. , During Inspector J. S. Tennanfs ,ib. seneo in England tho Wellington Education Board made use of tho services of r-i 'i W A '*'• Gruil(i y (headmaster of the Uydo Quay School), as a locum tcnciis. In the courso of. their annual report to the board the inspectors 6ay: "As Mr. Grundy is a teacher of high standing and long experience, both in England and in tho Dominion, it may 'm of interest to give soino of tho impressions formed by him while engaged on inspectorial work. Ho writes:— "'ln most of the small country schools I was impressed with the fact 'that tho teachers wore striving loyally and earnestly to do their best for tho children, and tho work was in many .cases of a higher order of merit than I had expected to find. There was close supervision of written work, which' in most cases was very neatly done, and evidently an earnest endeavour was being made to meet the requirements of the standards of education in every possible way. 'Die children, too, were more responsive than I had expected to find them, and it is evident that the 'leaven' of the spirit of the new education is working, and is having a beneficial effect on education in these remote districts. Great credit is due to many of the country teachers for the care they bestow on the upkeep of the board's properly. In connection with some of even the smallest schools there a're beautifully-kept gardens in which the pupils work, and from which, educationally, they undoubtedly obtain much profit as well as enjoyment.'"
