Sir William Ramsay, the eminent scientist, in an address before the Smoke Abatement Society, said it would ba possible (o sink a shaft into coal-hearing strata, and the admit oxygen required to burn the coal and then draw off gas for producing electric power at the pit head. He believed it would be possible in this way to manufacture sixteen units of electricity for , a penny, and to transmit the power over a radius of two hundred miles.
