(By Tclocrapli.-SDecial Corresrondent.l Palmerston North, March 25. There was a narrow iscape from a railway accident in the Square to-day. An elderly man, driving a trap, crossed tho lino at one of the comers without noticing a train coming along, and the vehicle was missed by only a few inches. Joseph Culieii, an elderly man, fell in Domain Street on Saturday night, breaking his leg. He was conveyed to tho hospital. At tho Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., Cobb and Co. were, lined 20.5. and costs for a breach of the Butchers' Award, in not keeping a wages book, paying n boy less than tho award wages, and Keeping more than the proportion of boys allowed by the award. Several alleged breaches of the Tailors' Award wern heard, the magistrate reserving his decision. For issuing a receipt without a stamp, George Buckmaii, of l.'matoi, >vas lined 55., with costs one guinea. A number of breaches of the borough by-laws were also dealt with. A. communication has been received by Mr. L. A. Abraham, secretary of the Manawatu Automobile Association, from the Hawke's Bay Association, suggesting a conference of automobile associations, with th(! object of dealing with proposed legislation for regulating the driving of motors, the licensing of drivers, arrangement of a speed limit, the erection of danger signals, and direction posts, and various other matters. It is probable a conference will bt> arranged. Considerable interest is being aroused in connection with the forthcoming Mayoral election between Messrs. J. A. Nash (present Mayor) and F. J. Nathan. Both sides are working very hard and express confidence as to the result of the poll. Mr. Nathan proposes to resign his seat on the council before the day of election, and quite a number of candidates are likely to contrive to fill the vacancy thus caused. Among these are Messrs. B. Toms, C. S. Pickering, 11. M. Haycock, ami H. It. Woon, while it is probable several others will be added to the list. The teachers of All Saints' Sunday School are arranging to hold a. picnic at Tiritca shortly. The annual cricket niaich between the Palmerston and Dannevirke High Schools wa.s played on the sports ground here on Saturday, the home'team winning by an innings and 111 runs. Tho Palmerston bovs compiled 121 (Low 29, Luxford 22, Harwood 17, Swanson 12, Hodder 11). Dannevirke made 38 in the first innings(Wilson 10), and 70 in (he second (Allardice 21, Wilson 16, Webber 11). At Hie Palmerston tennis courts on Saturday tho final contest for the country cup was played between the ( Palmerston and Orona (Feilding) clubs, tho latter winning by 7 to G, und tho cup was presented to tho victors by Mr. G. H. Morrah, president of tho Manawatu Tennis Association. Mr. Ongley, captain of the Oroua Club, returned thanks, and Mr. V. Pirani, president of the samo club, thanked the Palmerston club for its hospitality.
