PROSPECTIVE APPOINTMENTS.

FOR MAJOR M'DONALD AND CAPTAIN SKDDON. It is understood that upon the return to New Zcalnud of Major T. W. Jl'Douald (commandant of the Junior Cadets) and Captain R. J. Soddon (formerly staff officer to the Adjutant-General at headniiiU'(ers), after their period of training, they will be posted to district appointments as officers in charge of area groups. Under the new scheme of military defence, provision was made for tho organising of the 50 training areas into n<lministrntivo groups, coiißisting of three or four areas, according to the. exigencies of population, geographical considerations, mid so on. Tho Wellington district i-onunancl, for example, includes sixteen areas, grouped in four administrative districts, and heretofore, pending the gradual development of Hie scheino as a whole, the administrative duties of each group havo been in part attended to by the area officer and partly by tho district headquarters staff. 'Die area officer, in addition, is tho regimental adjutant of his district, and with ono thing and another has hnd bis hnnda more than full of business. By degrees, however, group officers aro being appointed, thus relieving the regimental*officers of a good deal of administrative routine, and leaving them free- to keep nn oecnsional eye on their regiments. Care is being talten, however, to appoint, as far as possible, officers who have had some administrative training as well ae regimental experience.
