CIVIC AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.
Tho fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. The Deputy Mayor (Mr. John Smith) presided, and there were also present: Councillors h. Fletcher, F. Cohen. G. Frost, W. H. P. Barber, A. If. Atkinson, J. Godber, 1). M'linren, A. H. Hindmarsh, L. M'Kenzic, 'J. Trevor, 11. A. Cnmertm.. Five applications for drainage on the deferred payment 'system weiu granted, tho applicants being without funds. .11 was decided to pay the balance of .£•25 to Mr. Gardiner for his rail-clean-ing device, as recommended by the Tramway Board of Management. Bonuses to tram conductors for the period enileil January 9, 1912, and amounting to JE2I 11s. Sd., were authorised to be paid. The council decided that a wooden breatwork at Mariri Road, which is not in compliance with the by-laws, cannot be allowed to remain. On tho application of the Post and Telegraph Department, it was agreed to issue numbers to motor cycles used by the Telegraph Exchange, free of cost. An applicant was granted a peanut pland in Old Customhouse Street, with hours to be limited to G to 10 p.m. and 2 to C run. on Saturdays, such permit to bo revocable at any time, and the position to bo fixed by the chief sanitary inspector. Consent was granted for the construction of a street between Pitt and George Streets, Wndostown, subject to the engineer's requirements being given effect to.
