Woo.l, tho local organiser of the Oversells Club, Rave an address on tho aims and objects of the club to a fair audience at tho Municipal Jlall on Wednesday night. Mr. ]!. Gardiner, president of tho local branch, ■ was in the chair. Mr. Wood said the club now numbered 70,000 members with branches all over the world. The membership of the .Mnnawalu branch was 530, and he hoped to see tbi" raised to 5300.
At the- meeting of (he Borough Council on Wednesday night, Councillor F. Xalhaii, who is a candidate for tho Mayoralty, said ho would resign his seat on tliß council.
The choir of All Snints Church has commenced rehearsals of Stniner's "Crucifixion" for Good Friday. Mr. A. Drew is conductor.
Tho Sunday School teachers of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church propose to invite the Presbyterian Church Committee to hold the first Sunday School teachers' conference in Palmerston. The conference will tako place alxmt the last week in December, and will last threo or four days. A narrow escape from a nastv accident hnppened in the Manawntu Gorge yesterday afternoon. Two nu-n, A. Trewcek and A. Morgan, were going through tho Gorge on a railway jigger, and had just passed over a bridge when the vehicle left tho rails. Treweek had his leg injured, and was brought, into Palmerston. Had the jigger left the rails while, on the bridge, the men would have fallen SO feet.
Mr. C. Wilson, M.P. for Taumaruiwi, was a visitor to Palmerston to-day. 'llic Terrace End Bowling Club's tournament yesterdav proved most successful, there being rinks present from ail tho clubs in the surrounding district. The contest was continued at night by gas light, and proved most enjoyable, though a shower of rain mndo things uncomfortable for a time. The tournament was continued till about 10 p.m., and got down to the final between rinks skipped by H. Nash and A. Pickering. It was decided to postpone this game, which will Iks played on the Terrace End green at a time to be fixed. Whilst the bowling was going on in the evening on tho green, a concert and dance was held in the social hall in the pavilion, at which a very large number of friends of the bowlers were present, and a very pleasant time was spent.
On the tennis courts at the Terrace End bowling green yesterday afternoon a match was played between the Oroua and Terrace End Tennis Clubs, tho latter winning by 1U games to 89. There was a fair attendance at the Opera House last night, when Mr. F. J. isa'.han, a candidate for the Mayoralty, addressed the electors on municipal affairs, which the candidate went into very fully. Councillor H. Haydon presided, and at the conclusion of the address a motion was unanimously carried that Mr. Nathan was a fit and proper person the poM'ion of Mayor. A Wellington representative criclct team is to play Mannwatu on the Palmerston sports ground during Easter. The following players will represent tho Palmerston Tennis Club in the country cup competition against Oroua on Saturday:— Messrs. J. M? Collins, A. Winton, T.. A. Moodie, Clere, Drew, Mrs. Clere, Misses Forsaith, Wilson, and Mason.. • The sports gatheriai; arranged by the local Hibernian Society on tlie Sports Ground yesterday afternoon attracted a fair nnmbrr of spectators, The arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. H. Kclleher, and his committee were very complete, and the sports were carried out without a hitch. The handicappina of Mr. T. Stubbs resulted in some exciting finishes. St. Patrick's Handicap was won by TI. Klagpoole, who breasted the tape first in the 100 yds. and 4Joy<ls., anil secured the handsome cup presented by Air. 13. Kelleher.
