A HOLIDAY GRIEVANCE.

MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES: DISCKIMINATION ALLEGED.

Councillor Fletcher asked a question at the City Council meeting last night with reference to the holidays granted to certain corporation employees. He had been informed, he said, that the men receiving 9s. a day had been granted holidays, but those receiving Bs. Gd. a day had been refused, although some of them had been in the permanent employ of the council for several years.

Councillor M'Larcn supported the question, and stated that he considered the position was a most unfair one.

The Deputy-Mayor stated that tho men receiving 83. Gd. a day were supposed to bo casuals, and were not entitled to n holiday on pay. He promised, however, to have the matter brought before the committee, and to have a report furnished as to Ihc period during which the vnrions "casuals" had bten in tho em-e ploy of tho council.

Councillor Fletcher raised another question as to why the foreman of the gardens had not been granted a holiday that had been recommended by his physician and approved by tho Reserves Committees. The man was run down through "working from daylight to dark" in the council's employ. The speaker added that he was bringing tho matter up to try nnd get justice done, as the man had been simply persecuted. Ho was anxious to get nis holiday nt Easter, so as he could take advantage of tho cheap fares, but it had been deferred until after Easter.

Tim Deputy-Mayor considered that Councillor Fletcher's statements were extiKßOrnteil, but promised tn look into the matter, and, on tho suggestion of Councillor M'Larcn, snid he would fend on instructions for the man's holiday to start nt once.
